Maria Bello, Actress and Activist

Maria Bello

Maria Bello is an internationally renowned actor, activist, and author.  She has won numerous awards for her acting and in 2009 she was voted one of Variety Magazine’s most powerful women in Hollywood for her activism.  She is the Co-Founder of We Advance, an organization that digitally empowers and connects women throughout Haiti.  She has spoken around the country on social impact investing, Haiti, women’s rights, LGBT rights, and human rights including TEDx in Washington D.C., the ACLU, Variety Magazine, Vital Voices and the State Department.  Her upcoming speeches are TED Women 2015 and TED Cannes 2015 on her new book “Whatever Love is Love” coming out on April 28th.

The book is inspired by her essay, “Coming Out as a Modern Family” is one of the ten most popular Modern Love columns to appear in the New York Times in a decade.  The article was about how to tell her son, then 12 years old that she had fallen in love with a woman. Jack’s response—simple and wise beyond his years was “Whatever, Mom…love is love.” Seeing that Jack didn’t see traditional labels of partnership, Maria began to contemplate the labels she herself had worn during her life.

The column started a worldwide conversation about how many of the labels we all know and use are simply outdated today. Partnership, career, love, sexuality, all of these aspects of life are fluid now. We no longer fit into the tidy little boxes, and neither do our lives.  Questioning those labels is at the heart of Whatever…Love is Love.
